How portal linking works

When you enter a portal, the game converts your position to the other dimension and looks for the closest existing portal inside a search area (Java: 128 blocks in the Overworld, 16 in the Nether; Bedrock: 128 in both). If one is found you arrive there; if not, a new portal is generated near the target.

What the statuses mean

Linked both ways: the trip there and the trip back use the same pair. One-way: you arrive at a portal that sends you back somewhere else, often because two Overworld portals share one Nether portal. Makes a new portal: there is no portal in range, so the game will create one, usually in a bad spot.

How to use the nether portal linking calculator

  1. Add each portal with its dimension and coordinates (or load the example).
  2. Read the status column and fix any red or orange rows.
  3. Use Share network to send the list to friends on your server.

Nether Portal Linking Calculator FAQ

Why does my nether portal link to the wrong portal?

The game picks the closest portal in the search area. If another portal is closer to the converted target than yours, you arrive there. Move the portal or build its partner closer.

How far apart do Overworld portals need to be?

On Java, Overworld portals at least 128 blocks apart (in X or Z) get separate Nether portals; 256 is safer. On Bedrock, the Nether search is much bigger, so aim for over 1,024 blocks apart.

Is my portal list private?

Yes. It is stored only in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server unless you share the link yourself.
