Nether Portal Calculator
Convert Overworld and Nether coordinates in both directions, see the exact search area the game uses, and check that every portal links the right way.

Overworld X and Z ÷ 8, rounded down. Y stays the same.
When you enter the portal, the game looks for an existing Nether portal within 16 blocks of the target (Java), at any height.

Check every portal link at once
Most calculators convert one coordinate. This one checks your whole portal network: which portal each one really connects to, which trips are one-way, and where a new portal would appear.

How to
How to use the nether portal calculator
- Get your coordinates. Press F3 on Java (or turn on Show Coordinates on Bedrock) and stand in your portal. You can paste the whole F3 line.
- Read the partner position. The calculator converts both ways as you type and shows the search area for your edition.
- Build inside the box. Build the partner portal at the result, then add both to the linking check to make sure nothing steals the link.
Java vs Bedrock
Nether portal rules by edition
The math is the same on both editions, but Bedrock searches a much bigger area in the Nether, so its portals link from much further away.
| Rule | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Coordinate ratio (X, Z) | 1 : 8 | 1 : 8 |
| Y (height) | Not scaled | Not scaled |
| Search area in the Overworld | 128 blocks around the target | 128 blocks around the target |
| Search area in the Nether | 16 blocks around the target | 128 blocks around the target |
| Nether roof | Y 127 (you can build above it) | Y 127 (top of the world) |
| Frame size | 4 × 5 to 23 × 23 | 4 × 5 to 23 × 23 |

FAQ
Nether portal calculator FAQ
How does a nether portal calculator work?
It divides Overworld X and Z by 8 (rounding down) to get Nether coordinates, or multiplies Nether X and Z by 8 to get Overworld coordinates. Y stays the same. This calculator also shows the search area the game uses to find an existing portal.
How do I link two nether portals?
Build the Nether portal at the converted coordinates of your Overworld portal, keep Y close, and make sure no other portal is closer to that spot. The linking check on this page shows if anything will steal the link.
Why did my nether portal create a new portal?
There was no existing portal inside the search area (16 blocks in the Nether on Java), so the game made a new one. Build your own portal at the calculated spot, then break the unwanted one.
Does the Y coordinate matter?
Y is not converted, but it counts in the distance. When two portals are both in range, the one closest in 3D, including height, wins.
Is the nether portal calculator the same for Bedrock?
The 1:8 math is the same. Bedrock searches 128 blocks in both dimensions, so switch the edition toggle to Bedrock to see the right search area.
How much obsidian do I need for a nether portal?
10 obsidian for the smallest 4 × 5 frame without corners, or 14 with corners. See the nether portal size calculator for every size.
Can I paste coordinates from the F3 screen?
Yes. Paste the “XYZ” line from the F3 screen, a /tp command or three numbers, and the calculator reads them.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, works on phones, and runs in your browser.
